About the Design

Located a few miles north of downtown Dallas on a 9.7-acre site that includes a serene 5.4-acre pond, Faith Presbyterian Hospice, also known as The Pickens Center, is the first stand-alone hospice in Dallas, bringing unmatched education and training to the hospice community and unique care approaches to patients and families. This dynamic property is made up of five centers of excellence geared towards providing incomparable tranquility and a strong connection to family and nature, all working collectively to create an environment of unwavering solace for patients and their families.

Designers sought to create a space not only for patients, but for staff and families as well, establishing an inclusive approach in the inception of the project including a collaboration with key individuals in the healthcare, hospitality, and senior living community. Communication with neighbors surrounding the site was maintained through informational meetings to ensure neighbors were informed of the project and its impact on the community. The plan was to separate facilities for Inpatient Care, Resource and Education, and the Bereavement Center, so each building’s design reflects its specific requirements and unique function allowing the property to immerse patients, families, and staff into a state of tranquility and comfort. The designers went to great lengths to take advantage of this ideal location by laying out each building with a direct view of the pond creating a deep sense of serenity and close connection to nature. Abundant natural light and a consistent view of the Reflection Center provides unique repose for patients and families nearing the end of their journey.

Surrounded by specially designed meditative and memory gardens, walking paths, a labyrinth, and a tranquil spring-fed pond, the Reflection center provides families and staff a place to reflect and prepare for the road ahead. Each patient room was designed away from corridors for privacy and to provide a place of quiet reflection and support an essence of home. Rooms are only a short distance from family rooms and caregivers’ stations allowing easy access and quality care for patients and staff alike.

T. Boone Pickens believed this facility “sets the standard for what can and should be done globally.” With an abundance of amenities, reposeful therapy opportunities, and a soothing residential aesthetic connecting patients to the serenity of nature and the comfort of home, Faith Presbyterian Hospice is one-of-a-kind in the nation.
